0.) Well the call for volunteers was a-ringin' in my ears,
I was prayin' to be one that he was choosin'
When he called my name, I was jumpin' with delight.
When my feet hit the ground they were movin'.
1.) Deep behind enemy lines, we were stealin' in the night,
And we entered their fair city before morning.
There we chanced to meet a young lady on the street,
And her kindness blessed the morning.
How could she ever have know where we were from?
And what was this confession she was making?
Had our reputation from over Jordan come,
And sent Jericho a shakin,?
2.) We abode with her that day, 'til we heard the soldiers comin'
And the word came on down, our days were numbered,
Oh but, by her cunning, she sent 'em off a running,
And by her loving grace, we were covered.
When she said goodbye, tghere were teardrops in her eyes,
And a scarlet thread she was weavin'
It was her hope of life; she'd be hanging it out on high,
As a sign of her believin'.
3.) So we scurried down the wall, headed up the mountain,
Knowin' that her hopes were set upon us.
And then back at the camp, we reported on the land,
And of all that had been promised.
Through the course of time, that old scarlet river winds,
Carrying believers to salvation,
And her scarlet seams knit the banners of our dreams:
Our God's own holy nation.
