10 THINGS LEADERS DO

(From the Book "9 THINGS A LEADER MUST DO" by John C. Maxwell)

1.) DISCOVER IT! (Know your purpose, and make it CLEAR to all concerned.
"That you might know the hope of His calling, and his power through you" (Eph 1:17-20)
"My meat is to do my Father's will." (John 4:34) "Follow me as I follow Christ." (1 Cor 11:1)
Evacuate your heart. Dig up its desire. Who are you? What did God have in mind? What did He plant in you? Seek coaches and encouragers and situations that will grow you accordingly. Take sensible risks.
Know who you are in Christ. Find his will through your desires ("burden"), gifts and opportunities.

2.) PURIFY IT! (Weed out the things that are killing you and your mission.)
"Not all lawful things are expedientI will not be brought under the power of anything." "Cast out the scorner, and strife will cease." (Prov 22:10)
Weed out three areas that are going nowhere, and distract you:
Relationships / Activities / Money Drains / Time wasters.

3.) THINK FUTURE (Know your GOALS and don't get distracted.)
"This one thing I do, forgetting what is behind, I press forward, to Christ's high calling." (Phil 3:13-14) "The prudent man forsees the evil and avoids it." (Prov 22:3)
Play out the whole movie. Consider consequences. Do you plan to be alive five years from now? What can you do that will improve that world?

4.) WORK IT! (How can each situation be "played" to make things better?)
"Taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ." (2 Cor 10:5)
Don't fear hard work and some conflict. When it comes to your calling, be superman!
Live in your position and calling.

5.) STEP BY STEP (Be diligent, disciplined, persistent, steady)
"The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord." (Ps 37:23-24) "Consider the ant…"
Try this equation: Small steps forward x Every day x Lotsa days = Lotsa forward progress.
Shun the "quick fix, thrill me now, and pretend tomorrow will be okay." (Prov. 28:20. Reliable vs. Rush.)

6.) HATE EVIL (Principles cannot be sacrificed for practicality)
"I hate them with perfect hatred." (Ps 139:19-22) "7 things God hates" (Prov 6:16-19)
Hatred is the immune system of the soul. What we hate says a lot about who we are and what we value.
"Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil, and cling to what is good." (Rom 12:9)
Objective Vs Subjective hate. Good hate (motivates positive change) vs. Bad hate (tears people down.)

7.) EQUITY vs. "FAIRNESS" (Don't go tit-for-tat)
"Is it not mine to do with as I please?" (Matt 20:1-16) "Turn the other cheek." (Luke 6:29)
Reactionary tit-for-tat relationships will fail. They give others power over you. Your "niceness" depends on theirs.

Luke 6:32-35, Rom 12:17-18, 21. When we err, we need support, correction, and guidance. (Discuss how to teach it?)

8.) BE MAGNANIMOUS (Include, delegate, encourage, acknowledge)
"I planted, Appollos watered, but God gave the increase." (1 Cor 3:6)
"No man lives to himself, no man dies to himself ." (Rom 14:7)
Include OTHERS in the POSITIVES. Starting with praise to God, then thanks to Him & congrats to others.

9.) BE HUMBLE (Teachable, and part of something more than yourself.)
"In multitude of counselors…" (Prov 11:14) "Pride comes before a fall." (Prov 16:18)
Include YOURSELF in the NEGATIVES. (Including ignorance and inexperience.)
Everyone who's working hard, screws up. Understand. (How to teach it?)

10-) IGNORE THE POLLS (Value godly counsel, seeking to please God.)
"My testimony is true, because I seek God's will, not the will of man." (John 5:44)
Don't BASE your decisions on reactions of others. Calculate it, but remember, it's not the goal.
Don't be manipulated by guilt, anger, or pressure. Discuss hurt vs. harm. Luke 6:26.
