ADDICTIONS

What They Are - And How to Beat 'Em

"A man with no rule over his spirit, is like a city that is broken down, without walls."
"A prudent man foresees the evil and avoids it. The simple pass on and suffer."
Proverbs 25:28, 22:3, 27:12

Bad habits and addictions are "sins", since they cause us to" miss the mark" of our purpose:
We're to Love & glorify God, love others, and be good stewards of our own gifts.

Lust

The above sins become "natural" to the sinner. It's in his nature to perform them. This "natural-ness" is called "the flesh" (Gk:"Sarx) in the bible. He is captivated by the lust of the eye, the lust of the world, and the pride of life. He may avoid certain sins, but will inevitably choose others. So,
"They that are in the flesh cannot please God." Rom. 8:8

We are told: "Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh." (Gal. 5:16)
What does that mean?

1.) Accept the knowledge that you received God's Holy Spirit when you were "saved." (Eph 1:13)
2.) KNOW - That Christ broke power of the "law of sin" described above, thru the cross & resurrection. (Rom 6:6-9, 14.)
3.) RECKON - That being "In Christ" instead of "In Adam", we are partakers of Christ's death and resurrection, and its victory over the fallen, Adamic, sin nature. (Rom 6:11, 17-18).
4.) YIELD - Choose then, by HIS power, (trusting Him as you obey) to live accordingly, replacing old life (character, energy, behavior) with new. (Rom 6:12-13, 19.)

Default Programming - The mind will "re-set" to the base level at which it is "trained."

So that's what's going on - and here's how to implement victory:

BEATING "Personality/Character" sins:

Requires honest knowledge of your strengths and weaknesses, (including feedback from trusted friends) combined with feeding the spirit (bible reading and prayer), and ACTIVELY seeking to express the fruit of the spirit. (Gal 5:22). Christ possesses ALL of the positive traits, and NONE of the negative ones of all personality types. As HE grows in you, you're not trapped in the down side of personality-based sins. (Diagram below).
PS - "Honest Knowledge" = 5 things - Recognize sin. Don't excuse it, Manage sin situations. Take consequences & encouragement after failure. Understand and help others.

BEATING "Learned Behavior" sins:

Requires living in fear of God, not men. Then commit to replace misbehavior with a positive counterpart. Eg - swearing with praising, social drinking with Ice Tea, bad music with good music, etc. Begin a streak of the replacing behavior. It'll become a good habit in time.

BEATING "Spoiled":

(Prov 25:28 - "He that hath no rule over his spirit is like a city broken down and without walls.") You need discipline. How to get it:
1- Admit/Repent/Commit 2- Establish a Routine: a.) Physical exercise, b.) A Plan: Goals, charts, etc. c.) Accountability d.) Feed the spirit. 3- Establish regular activity: Work, volunteerism, ministry.

BEATING "Chemical" sins:

Requires very strong repentance: a true hatred of the results of the sin. See yourself as its slave, and your family as innocent victims. Then 1- Face up to a period of painful withdrawal, (Drastic measures: "If thine eye offend thee…" Matt 18:7-9) 2- Replace the behavior with something positive, and biblically sound or at least safe. 3- Besides your general "final decision" to wage war, make a daily "final decision" also. (Eg - "I don't.") 4- Minimize opportunity (ie, availability) of the addictive source. 5- Enlist a prayer-support team and accountability friend. 6- If you fall, get up quickly! (1 John 1:9).

BEATING "Lust" is usually the toughest ongoing battle:

. (1 Thes 4:3-8) 1- Don't feed it! 2- If it "finds you", learn to turn away quickly. 3- Have a healthy relationship with your spouse. 4- "Live in the spirit", which means, have a healthy, active spiritual life (see chart) so that you don't "default" into lust.

HOW TO SET YOURSELF UP FOR FAILURE:

1.) Have lots of free time, with very little responsibility.
2.) Avoid reading the bible, going to church, or fellowshipping with Christians.
3.) No accountability.
4.) Complacency. (No quest for growth, knowledge.)
5.) Consumerism. (Have your world revolve around you. Don't give of self.)

HOW TO SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS:

0.) Organize Yourself:
1.) Feed the Spirit.
2.) Be spiritually, mentally, and physically active.
3.) Pray without ceasing (ie, walk in God's presence, daily.) ie, LOVE GOD!
4.) Having meaningful Christian friendships.
5.) Be the warrior.
