FORGIVENESS

0.) Intro - Luke 5:20-21 - Who can forgive sins but God alone?


Definitions: A.) Greek "Aphremi" = Dismissal of hindrance to relationship.
B.) English "Forgiven" = To give up claim for recompense from.


1.) Sin and our need for Forgiveness - 1 Jn 5:17a. Romans 6:23a.


2.) God's desire for reconciliation - Rom 3:11, 1 Pet 3:9, Rom 5:8, 1 Jn 4:19


3.) Guilt - 3 sources, (self, devil, God), 3 dimensions, (past, present, future).


4.) Justification: "Forgiveness Plus" = Righteous.
a.) Rom 3:24 - Freely by His grace.
b.) Rom 5:9 - By His blood.
c.) Rom 3:28 - By faith.
d.) Rom 5:18 - Unto Life


5.) Justification does NOT bring - freedom from worldly consequences of sin.
Justification DOES bring 4 things - Rom 5:1-2 (peace, access, grace, joy)


6.) Specific marks of justification - Rom 5:3,4 and Rom 5:5


7.) Sin and Believers:

a.) We are able to sin - 1 Jn 1:9, Rom ch 7.
b.) We don't have to - Rom 6:14
c.) We aren't able to sin "abandonly" - 1 Jn 3: 8-9


8.) Sin in believers lives brings:

a.) Chastisement - 1 Cor 11: 31-32
b.) Loss of Joy - Psalm 51:12
c.) Loss of communication - Psalm 66:18
d.) Limits of usefulness - 2 Tim 2:20-21 (wrt vs 16,22)


9.) The cure: confess / Repent - (Gk "homolegeo") - 1 John1:9, Matt 5:23-25.


10.) Repentance and the Unpardonable Sin - Mark 3: 28-29, Heb. 6: 4-6, 2Cor7: 9-10
(repentance is the key - are you willing to surrender?)


11.) Forgiving Others - Matt 6:12-15, Matt 18: 23-35, Eph 4:32
"Forgive the same way God does."
A.) Four things it doesn't mean:
1.) Condone what was done
2.) It doesn't hurt
3.) Blindly allow for repeat performance
4.) Relationship remains the same if no repentance
B.) Four things it does mean:
1.) Let God judge (Don't take vengeance, don't slander.)
2.) Don't be bitter (Rebuke self talk. Don't hate. No pampering or excuses.)
3.) See clearly (See offender for who they are: good/bad.)
4.) Love. (Be considerate. Care. Pray.)
